Master's or Doctoral Degree in MFT
COAMFTE-accredited program strongly preferred. Degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling Psychology, or Clinical Psychology may qualify depending on state.
3,000 Hours Post-Degree Supervised Experience
Most states require 2,000–4,000 supervised clinical hours after graduation, including direct client contact and supervision hours. California requires 3,000 hours.
MFT National Exam (AMFTRB)
The MFT exam administered by AMFTRB (Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards). Exam score transfers between states.
Active LMFT License — State of Assignment

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing adds $2–$4/hr and opens trauma-specialized inpatient and residential contracts.
